The summer school provides outstanding jazz tuition in stunning surroundings on the Isle of Skye for instrumentalists and vocalists aged between 12 and 21 by a carefully selected team of renowned jazz musicians and educators from the UK and beyond.
The summer school represents a wide range of ability but a common enthusiasm for jazz. Any instrument is welcome. Students gain experience of playing in small combos and enjoy classes covering rhythm, harmony, listening, theory and much more. Each day of the summer school concludes with a jazz club where anyone can take the floor.
Thanks to the support of Creative Scotland’s Youth Music Initiative, a number of subsidised places are available for our 2018 Training Ensembles and Jazz Summer School. Please visit our Financial Assistance page for further information.
NYOS Jazz applications are now closed and will open again in September 2018.

It's a pleasure to welcome you to our latest newsletter, a chance to look back on the incredible success of all our summer activities. We'll report on the concerts put on in July and August by our Junior, Senior and flagship Symphony orchestras; we will look back on a joyful summer for our Jazz programme, with the very special Summer School and Jazz Access that took place on Skye, onto the incredible success of our Jazz Orchestra tour, culminating with a barnstorming first appearance at the Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival.
One of my all time favourite albums is Donald Fagen’s post Steely Dan 1981 debut solo album, The Nightfly. Well, Malcolm Edmonstone has taken the album and arranged it for the NYOS Jazz Orchestra performing a ‘big band’ rendition from start to finish (with five brilliant vocalists) conducted by Andrew Bain in Edinburgh’s brand new Rose Theatre on Rose Street.
We are delighted to share with you our latest newsletter, with information relating to all our forthcoming performances. NYOS will be covering the length and breadth of Scotland this summer so we do hope you will join us.
We are proud to announce, on behalf of the Endowment Trust of the National Youth Orchestras of Scotland that the recipient of the Colin MacLean Bursary Fund 2017 is French horn player Diana Sheach.
We are delighted to welcome you to our latest newsletter, and to revisit with you the excitement of our spring concerts.
The Americas is the theme for all National Youth Orchestras of Scotland ensembles throughout 2017. Each orchestra will perform a blend of well-known standards together with rarely heard gems directly linked to, or inspired by the Americas.
Within this theme we will present a broad spectrum of classical and jazz music through to contemporary repertoire, from North and South American composers (with music rarely heard in the UK or European concert halls) together with more prominent European composers inspired to write works celebrating the remarkable diversity of the Americas.
What an incredible summer it has been for NYOS Jazz! Back in July, the young musicians were given a warm welcome once again as they gathered at Sabhal Mor Ostaig on the Isle of Skye. The Jazz Summer School has definitely earned its place in the Fèis an Eilean (Skye Festival) now, and it is always a pleasure to return there for a week of creativity and shared musical experiences.
Welcome to our summer season preview containing details of our upcoming concerts from July to October together with booking information and exclusive ticket offers for all our valued mailing list subscribers.
It has been such a wonderful spring season full of dance-infused repertoire, magnificent performances and big announcements.
2015 has been a magnificent year for all NYOS ensembles, so far, with critically acclaimed performances across the board; bumper audiences throughout Scotland and of course, a welcome return to the international stage.
