You Said, We Did
Responses to your youth voice feedback from the NYOS spring course and concerts
Thank you to everyone who contributed feedback on our spring courses and concerts through the post-course feedback form, the questions of the day and the in-person focus group.
Your thoughts and opinions are vital to ensuring that what we deliver are the best it can be for you. NYOS is your orchestra and we want to make sure that our courses are a welcoming space where you can join our community, feel you can belong, and thrive in outstanding music-making.
Below is a list of the key things that were raised in the spring and how we will seek to address them:
-
Summer Poster Design + Promo Ideas Thank you so much for your thoughts and suggestions for the summer concert poster design. These have been taken on board and passed to our designer to be incorporated before we roll out summer concert promotion. We are also really grateful for your promotional ideas for NYOS concerts. The Marketing team are working through these are seeing what we can undertake this summer.
We will make available to you on the website, digital versions of the poster and design templates for our social post available, to help you promote your concerts in your schools, colleges, universities and communities.
The Marketing team may also be in touch with some of you for some support in creating content for summer concert promo.
Finally, on the course, everyone will get a printed version of the summer concert poster for them to keep.
-
Course Schedule We got some great ideas on how to make the course schedule work better you. For the summer course we are going to particularly look at the length of the dinner break and how to make this better, ensuring all players get enough of a break to eat without having to rush.
We are also going to add locations to the schedules displayed around campus so everyone knows where things take place.
-
Concert Dress Check We know that the concert dress check takes up time, eating in lunchbreak, and can feel unnecessary for those that come to courses well prepared. However, it is important for us to make sure everyone has their concert dress with them in case people need items sent from home or dropped off on concert day. It is easy to forget something vital.
It may not seem it but, the quickest way for the Pastoral team to do this is to have everyone put their concert dress on. It is more efficient than laying clothes out in your rooms.
To accommodate the check, we will look to allocate 15 minutes on the specific lunchbreak when this happens so that you all get enough break time.
-
Doubling Parts Some of you flagged that the doubling of certain instruments, particularly in the woodwinds, was not the most effective in spring. We are making sure to check through doubling in brass and woodwinds for summer, consulting with tutors where required, to make sure these are allocated appropriately.
-
Welcome Session Thank you for your ideas for the Welcome Session and arrivals. These included providing maps for participants, wearing name badges on the first day, and better ice breakers to help everyone integrate better.
We are reviewing what happens during arrivals and at the Welcome Session and would look to incorporate your ideas.
-
Evening Social Spaces We know that your social time is important to you and there was feedback on shared social spaces in the evenings. We are working with the Pastoral team on this and will update you all at the Welcome Session on the summer course.
-
Wellbeing Water at the Sports Hall has been an ongoing issue and we are in talks with Strathallan to make sure this is rectified for the summer course.
Some of you also reflected that you would like more consistent warm-ups at the Morning Briefing as well as throughout the day. We will make sure that regular and consistent warm-ups are provided throughout the course.
-
Tea! Speaking of keeping warm, many of you flagged that you would appreciate the opportunity to have a cup of tea during breaks.
We are working with Strathallan to explore the best way to make this happen while fulfilling their health and safety requirements.
During the summer courses there will be more opportunities to feedback and make sure you have your voice heard on how we make sure our courses are as strong and enjoyable as possible.
