The National Youth Orchestras of Scotland (NYOS) has announced captivating pop-up performances taking place at Dynamic Earth Science Centre and Planetarium in Edinburgh on Saturday 11 July. These free performances present a fantastic opportunity for music lovers and science enthusiasts to experience live orchestral music in one of Scotland’s most distinctive venues.

Science and sound will coalesce as nearly 100 young musicians from across Scotland perform iconic movements from Gustav Holst’s instantly recognisable orchestral suite, The Planets. The venue, Dynamic Earth, is an innovative science centre and planetarium lying at the heart of the Scottish capital, featuring immersive 360°  galleries, a 4D flight simulator, a real-to-life iceberg and tropical rainforest biome, as well as a stunning full-dome 6K planetarium.

NYOS’ pop-up performances at Dynamic Earth this summer will combine the awe-inspiring power of Holst’s The Planets with the extraordinary skill, passion and joy of Scotland’s young musicians. Together, they promise a truly mind-blowing experience that opens our minds to the wonders of the universe, challenges our young players, and connects new audiences with orchestral music.
Kirsteen Davidson Kelly, CEO and Artistic Director, NYOS

We’re delighted to welcome NYOS to Dynamic Earth and create opportunities for even more people to experience the powerful connection between music and science. Bringing world class young musicians into our science centre expands access, sparks curiosity and reflects exactly what Dynamic Earth strives for: engaging, inspiring and inclusive experiences that help people explore our planet Earth in new ways.
Conor Ellis, Science Learning and Engagement Director, Dynamic Earth

Over the course of the 2026 concert season, Scotland’s national youth orchestras will perform at some of the country’s most prestigious concert halls, including City Halls in Glasgow, Perth Concert Hall and Usher Hall in Edinburgh. Tickets for all concerts are now on sale, with free tickets for under 18s and special discounts for students and people who are unwaged.

The 2026 programmes span more than a century of music, showcasing influential 20th-century composers such as Edward Elgar and Ralph Vaughan Williams alongside contemporary voices including Sarah Lianne Lewis, Camille Pépin and Iris ter Schiphorst. Exploring themes of cosmic wonder and earthly life, audiences will encounter works inspired by the dramatic landscapes of the Orkney Islands, the vibrant cultural scene of 1920s Paris, and even music inspired by colliding black holes.
