With auditions for the 2026 NYOS orchestras underway, this year’s cohort of ambitious young players has risen to the challenge, bringing passion and purpose to the stage.

Each Autumn, our orchestral auditions present an enjoyable and dynamic opportunity for aspiring young musicians to meet new people and pursue their musical ambitions in a welcoming, creative environment. Guided by expert professionals, young people develop confidence in their abilities, have the courage to challenge themselves, and demonstrate their potential.

The NYOS auditions process is made up of two key elements. Each applicant is first asked to submit a solo audition video, allowing every young person to showcase their passion and ability at a time and place that suits them. To demonstrate their musical skills, they are asked to prepare a selection of orchestral excerpts and a piece of their choosing.

Secondly, applicants are invited to audition in person alongside their peers. Rather than opting for traditional, in-person solo auditions, NYOS invites applicants to participate as a group.  Whilst solo auditions can prove stressful and may stifle the expressivity of young auditionees, our group auditions take a more relaxed approach, enabling young musicians to meet the NYOS community, work with like-minded peers, and learn from world-class music professionals in a comfortable and inspiring environment. The focus of these half-day sessions is on developing a group sound and exploring repertoire creatively, rather than on performance preparation – although music is supplied in advance for anyone who wishes to practise their part ahead of time.

The format of our auditions process has proven popular with our applicants since it was first introduced in 2024. Previous participants have reflected:

“I thought it was a relaxed and fun session where, despite it being a form of audition, it was still simply an enjoyable experience of ensemble playing. Whether or not I get a place, it was still a nice opportunity to have had.”

“Having the sectionals first and then going into the full orchestra meant playing in the ensemble was really enjoyable. The afternoon playing together was brilliant and I really felt relaxed and felt I could show my true abilities rather than being really anxious.”

“I really enjoyed learning the repertoire together, as an ensemble. I was glad we got given the music beforehand, so we could feel more comfortable going into the audition.”

The structure of our in-person audition days reflects the format of our residential courses. After a brief welcome and physical warm up, our dedicated team of tutors lead instrumental sectionals to run through the music, create a cohesive sound, and answer any questions before a break for refreshments.

Next, it’s time for the young musicians to bring what they have learnt to an ensemble setting. Led this year by conductor Rebecca Miller, the tutti sessions are a deeply enjoyable experience where the musicians can get a feel for playing as a part of an orchestra, explore the musical relationship between instrumental sections, and develop a connection with other young musicians.

No two musicians are alike; we believe every young person should be able to showcase their abilities in an inclusive environment where they can feel they belong. In turn, this allows us to find the best place for them in our orchestras. We warmly welcome applicants from all backgrounds into the NYOS community, accommodating their needs and nurturing their aspirations.

We would like to thank all applicants in advance for their dedication and commitment and extend our gratitude to our wonderful pastoral staff, instrumental tutors and conductor Rebecca Miller for their guidance and support.

NYOS auditions conclude later this month and orchestra places will be offered in December. Look out for news of our orchestral selection in early 2026.
