35th Anniversary Gala Concert
In 2003, NYOS commissioned leading Scottish composer Sally Beamish to compose a trumpet concerto for the man dubbed ‘the best trumpet player in the galaxy’ (The Times), Håkan Hardenberger, to perform at the BBC Proms. The resulting work, with its myriad of percussion and trumpet pyrotechnics, was so well received that NYOS and Hardenberger are again showcasing it in 2014.
The programme, conducted by the brilliant young Englishman Michael Francis, making his Scottish debut, will also feature Richard Strauss’s mammoth ‘Alpine Symphony’ requiring no fewer than 17 horn players, wind and thunder machines, organ and even a heckelphone. The tour culminates in the 35th anniversary celebration at Edinburgh’s Usher Hall, an event you really don’t want to miss.
