NYOS Symphony Orchestra
We are delighted to continue our partnership with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and we welcome to the podium former RSNO Assistant Conductor Christian Kluxen, now Music Director of the Victoria Symphony in Canada and Chief Conductor of the Arctic Philharmonic in Norway.
The orchestra performs Stravinsky’s Petrushka. The sensational sequel to The Firebird, Stravinsky’s ballet about the lovestruck puppet Petrushka astonished audiences in Paris in 1911, and over 100 years later, its orchestral colours shine just as bright.
In the second half, we perform Sibelius’s Symphony No.2. While not explicitly programmatic, the symphony was popularly dubbed the ‘Symphony of Independence’, due to its rousing finale and composition at a time of Russian sanctions on Finnish language and culture. At its premiere, a critic remarked that this work was ‘one of the few symphonic creations of our time that point in the same direction as Beethoven’s symphonies’.
Although his contribution is often overlooked in favour of his more bombastic contemporary, Mahler, Sibelius’s innovative and popular symphonies ensured that the form endured into the modern era.
