NYOS Junior Orchestra Spring 2022
NYOS Junior Orchestra was the first of our ensembles to be back on stage after two years, and we were incredibly excited to welcome back our youngest musicians in person on Friday 1 April 2022, after two years of online learning. Staff and students alike were delighted to be joined by conductor Natalia Luis-Bassa, who brought her great passion and energy to NYOS for a third year in a row.
Running for four full days, the course was packed with sessions that tackled more than just music, and included health and well-being workshops. After our first full day of sectionals and rehearsals, it was clear that our talented young musicians where thriving.
Fantastic 2nd day on the NYOS Junior Orchestra spring course. Our 1st full day of sectionals and rehearsals. Just wonderful to see so many young musicians back making music together again, in the same room! Thanks to the government funded Kickstart job creation scheme, NYOS was able to recruit our new Projects Assistant, Amy Cook. As part of her new role, we asked Amy to review the NYOS Junior Orchestra performance, and capture what it was like to be at her first classical concert as a member of the audience rather than as a performer.
“The Khachaturian Suites are amongst some of my favourite pieces – particularly the third one - so I was incredibly eager to hear this. I was floored by the talent of the NYOS Junior Orchestra. More so after remembering they’d only been rehearsing for a matter of days. I got absolutely lost in the music, I almost forgot I was sitting in a near-sold out audience.”
“Arturo Márquez’s Conga del Fuego Nuevo was an excellent finale to a wonderful concert. An absolute showstopper: I didn’t think the applause was going to stop! The chemistry between the musicians, across all sections, was remarkable. Natalia Luis-Bassa clearly worked hard, and was a fantastic conductor of Junior Orchestra, yet again. I was delighted to be part of the audience at my first NYOS concert, and I’m excited to see what the summer holds.”
A brilliant performance by the @NYOScotland Junior Orchestra! Young music students deserve so much credit for persevering on the very lonely road of online learning in a pandemic. Wonderful for them to be together again in-person. Bravo @NataliaLuisB! 🎻 🎶— Anna Cooper (@mrscoopsmrcoops) April 5, 2022
